| Dear
Friend,
The Hopeful Days Calendar is a social entrepreneur project in association
with H.O.P.E. (Help Oppressed People Everywhere). H.O.P.E. is an Upper
School community service organization at Gill St. Bernard's School, Gladstone,
N.J., designed to raise funds for national and international concerns.
In keeping with our school motto, "The World is Our Classroom,"
the mission of the Hopeful Days Calendar is to encourage social activism
especially among young people by highlighting the needs of people, particularly
in developing nations, and to provide suggestions on how to address these
needs. The calendar features organizations working toward sustaining a
healthy environment, alleviating poverty, promoting human rights and gender
equality, and increasing access to clean water, healthcare, and education.
Hopeful Days was established with the help of Youth Venture, a national
non-profit organization that provides grants and a variety of resources
in order to encourage young people (ages 12-20) to create community-minded
organizations, social clubs, or businesses. Hopeful Days also works in
cooperation with NetAid, a New York based non-profit organization that
mobilizes people in developed countries to make ending poverty a global
priority. World leaders have pledged to cut poverty in half by 2015. We
hope that this Hopeful Days calendar will inspire, encourage, and empower
you to assist them in meeting this important goal.
"Poverty is not to be suffered in silence by the poor. Nor can it
be tolerated by those with power to change it. The challenge is now to
mobilize action - state by state, organization by organization, and individual
by individual."
--Gustave Speth, UNDP
We look forward to hearing from you about how you are making a difference
in your community and in our world. Together we can create Hopeful Days!
